This festivity in the province of Bolívar is very visited by national and foreign tourists. It is an opportunity to enjoy joy, music and traditional dance. It takes place roughly between February or March each year in the carnival calendar. The party is complete, troupes and dances are held in each town of the province but officially it starts a week earlier than established at the national level.
Guaranda is known for this cultural expression of popular tradition, which has led to its recognition since 1999 as Ecuador's cultural heritage. In this carnival, there are several previous troupes, traditional dances and the festive air prior to the game with water, powder, flour, streamers, foam, eggs and other characteristic products of the carnival, in addition to typical foods and the strong brandy called "blue bird".
It is a mixture of festivities originating in the Catholic religion and in Inca rites. Its form of celebration unites indigenous, European and mestizo cultures.
